The EU and the U.S. confront distinct factor market dynamics and common pociy challenges.Labor market developments and long-term changes in capital markets and capital flows represent key problems in aging societies. The analyses presented here compare the European and U.S. patterns in this regard. Moreover, Schumpeterian innovation dynamics as well as energy policy issues receive attention. Considerable differerences in innovation dynamics are reported across countries. The book charts the role of different innovation systems and knowledge societies and highlights different policy approaches. Another focus is upon structural changes and innovation in open economies. Finally, medium and long-term options for transatlantic cooperation are evaluated against the backdrop of the Lisbon agenda.

Economic globalisation is a long-term international process in which the role of the EU, ASEAN, Korea, Japan and China is increasing. Die Untersuchung zeigt die Ursachen der US-Bankenkrise und deren internationale Ausbreitung auf. Neben der Rolle von Hedge Fonds und Finanzinnovationen wird die Untätigkeit der Bankenaufsicht als Kernproblem identifiziert, wobei für Deutschland das Versagen der BaFin beleuchtet wird. Mit Blick auf die USA wird der Lehman-Brothers-Konkurs als gefährlicher Politikunfall und Destabilisierungsimpuls eingeordnet. Die Mega-Rettungspakete für Banken werden als Teillösung eingestuft – ohne Strukturreformen werden sich die Probleme der Finanzmärkte weiter verschärfen. Vorgeschlagen als Lösung werden u. a. die Einführung einer Besteuerung der Renditevarianz, einer Evidenzzentrale für Kreditversicherungspolicen und ein neuartiger Qualitätssicherungsmechanismus bei Ratings sowie umfassendere Regulierungen der Banken. Ohne verbesserte US‑Regeln kann ein freier transatlantischer Kapitalverkehr nicht befürwortet werden. Die EU steht vor großen Anpassungen, die Weltwirtschaft vor der Gefahr einer neuen Weltwirtschaftskrise.
